about

From 2007-2009, I couldn't manage to get a band together. Instead, I got a bit abstract and did a number of improvised public performances and recordings with friends, fellow travelers, and my longtime collaborator Frank Fornsaglio. Raw and rough, these represent some of what went on in that period.

"53rd" & "19th" consist of collaborative, improvised percussion recorded in Pittsburgh on a dual drumkit with a shared bass drum. Facing each other on separate drum stools, Frank and I improvised together for about 30 minutes. All other instruments were added afterwards in Chicago after paring down the initial improvised percussion into smaller, loosely structured pieces.

The first version of "I'm dying up here" and "Violet my dear" come from a live performance under the moniker Business Hippy Mk. 2 - a short-lived improv project with a revolving door of members. The line about "culture" at the end is copped from a King Crimson live record.

"On Ice" and the second version of "I'm dying up here" were originally two 13 minute jams with superb rockabilly drummer Gary Weiss. The guitar plays more of a rhythmic role here, allowing the bass and drums to take the lead. Due to constraints of the source material, edits are readily apparent on "On ice, lover."
